The Sea Inside
The Sea Inside
“The Sea Inside” is one piece comprised of fifty-two paintings. (It’s the same number as a deck of cards, weeks in a year, and how old I was the year I painted them.) Each piece is 18x24, black and white, acrylic on paper, and features a large, totemic “wave” shape front and center every time. I employed chance operations in my process to disrupt my assumptions and to outflank my indecisions; it’s been an extremely useful tool to facilitate my “negative capability”. While ripe with imagery, these pieces also show the simple delights of painting itself, and by combining these dynamics within a straightforward system, the paintings aim to connect personal consciousness—inextricably—to shared meaning.
